Employment lawsuits typically rise in bad economic times but the increased public focus on meal-and-rest break violations have caused filings to skyrocket, lawyers say.

"The employee population is getting much savvier because of all the press," said Natalie Pierce, a San Francisco shareholder at Littler Mendelson, which defends employers. "You are hard pressed not to read about it."
