California immigrant laws have precedent, experts say

While the state's new measures may appear to flout federal policy, they fit into a long tradition of U.S. law seeking to integrate unauthorized immigrants, according to legal and political experts.

California passed a spate of measures this year granting undocumented immigrants drivers' licenses, law licenses, more leeway to pursue complaints against employers, and even added state police protection from Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
