Brown vetoes effort to loosen penalties for drug possession

The bill would have allowed county prosecutors to charge simple possession of certain drugs, such as cocaine or heroin, as either a misdemeanor or felony.

Gov. Jerry Brown over the weekend vetoed a bill that would have allowed prosecutors to seek lighter sentences for simple drug possession, marking the second year in a row that the effort by state Sen. Mark Leno, D-San Francisco has failed to become law.
