Oakland judge skeptical of expedited death penalty challenges

A new Justice Department rule that would authorize expedited post-conviction proceedings for death penalty defendants has triggered a legal fight.

A new Department of Justice rule that would authorize expedited post-conviction proceedings for death penalty defendants has triggered a court challenge and skepticism from an Oakland federal judge.


Chief U.S. District Judge Claudia Wilken in the Northern District issued a temporary restraining order earlier this month blocking the rule, which would have otherwise gone into effect last week.
