Let Them Eat Lunch or Pay the Consequences

Employment Column - By Lin M. Meyer - Although firms allow their secretaries and other staff to take lunch breaks, they often look the other way when staff become too busy for such a luxury. A nonprofessional employee's right to a meal or rest break should not be taken lightly, however. Labor Code Section 226.7(b), Industrial Welfare Commission Wage Order No. 4 and recent opinions expressed by the labor commissioner make this point clear.
