'Kill switch' could shut down protests

A new law requires that all smartphones sold in California include a "kill switch" that can shut the phone down remotely. Intended to deter theft, it may have other consequences. By Jake Laperruque

Anyone who watched a live stream of the protests in Ferguson, Mo., last month probably witnessed the following scene: police, clad in riot gear and armed with assault rifles, surrounded in tear gas, pointing to protesters filming on their phones and shouting, "Stop recording now!"
