Judge balks at fees in HP shareholder settlement, but deal might happen anyway

A federal judge refused to bless a settlement between Hewlett-Packard Co. and its shareholders Monday over the acquisition of Autonomy Corp., saying a provision guaranteeing plaintiffs' firms at least $18 million in fees was unnecessary.

SAN FRANCISCO - A federal judge refused to approve a settlement between Hewlett-Packard Co. and its shareholders Monday over the flubbed acquisition of Autonomy Corp., saying an unusual part of the deal that guaranteed two plaintiffs' firms at least $18 million in fees was unnecessary.
