Prison officials can't read inmates' letters to their attorneys, court rules
The 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruled this week that Arizona prisoners' outgoing legal mail is constitutionally protected, bringing the state in line with similar policies in nearby states, including California.

Letters from inmates to their attorneys are constitutionally protected from being read by prison officials, the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals has decided in an Arizona case.
The split ruling brings Arizona into line with nearby states - including California - that prohibit prison officials from reading prisoners' outgoing legal mail.
