Court Is a Gentler, Kinder Place Without Chief's Looming Presence

WASHINGTON - What a difference a justice makes. Especially if it's Chief Justice William H. Rehnquist. The chief was missing from the court's argument sessions during the weeks of Dec. 2 and 9 because he was recovering from knee surgery on Nov. 26. Though Rehnquist will participate in the 12 argued cases through briefs and argument transcripts, the absence of his looming, martinet presence in the middle of the curved bench notably changed the tenor of the proceedings.
