Jury Spares Inmate's Life for Prison Murder

LOS ANGELES - In the first capital murder trial in the state to weigh a defendant's claim that he is ineligible for the death penalty because of mental retardation, an Imperial County jury Monday rejected the death penalty for Calipatria State Prison inmate Louis Gomez, sentencing him instead to another term of life in prison without parole.
