Even with consumer spending capacity depressed from the Bay Area's continued employment slump, the local retail-property marketplace has remained a noteworthy bright spot.

Melissa Carter, research services manager for Grubb & Ellis Co.'s Bay Area operations., said that retail would remain the Bay Area's only income-property "bastion of strength" this year.
