New York beats California to practical skills punch

New York, not California, seized the mantle as the first state to mandate experiential training for bar applicants.

Legal education leaders in California have urged the state to implement practical skills requirements for aspiring lawyers to set a national standard that could inspire other states to follow suit.

But on Wednesday, New York seized the mantle as the first state to mandate experiential training for bar applicants and did so with a more flexible approach than had been proposed in California.
