Court closures reignite debate over telephone court appearances

In a state with traffic-choked freeways and counties as large as some Eastern states, the recent budget-driven closures of nearly 50 courthouses has brought controversies involving telephonic court conferences into sharper focus.

One recent hot summer day, an attorney's child desperately wanted to go swimming - and everyone on CourtCall had to hear the kid whine about it. The child's kvetching made the lengthy call nightmarish for everyone, according to the superior court judge in Southern California who presided over the call and wished to remain nameless.


Crying babies, barking dogs and, evidently, swim-deprived...
