After years of waiting, leaders break ground on new courthouse
A host of dignitaries from various branches of government spoke and helped break ground at the future site of the new federal courthouse in Los Angeles. Both Central District Chief U.S. District Court Judge George H. King and longtime courthouse advocate U.S. District Court Judge Margaret Morrow spoke to a small gathering Aug. 8 at the Second Street and Broadway location in downtown L.A. Both heaped praise on their former colleague and chief of the Central District judiciary, U.S. District Judge William Matthew Byrne Jr., who died in 2006 but was one of the driving forces behind the project's inception. Along with King and Morrow, speakers included newly elected Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti, U.S. Rep. Lucille Roybal-Allard and representatives from the General Services Administration as well as the architecture firm and construction team behind the project. — Henry Meier
