Landmark LA program would divert federal convicts

In an unprecedented effort to fight recidivism among federal criminal convicts, a new Central District program soon will give certain criminal defendants a chance to seek rehabilitation in lieu of a prison sentence.

LOS ANGELES - In an unprecedented effort to fight recidivism among federal criminal convicts, a new Central District program launching this year will place some offenders in rehabilitation rather than prison.


The Conviction and Sentencing Alternatives program, or CASA, will launch sometime in early 2012, Chief U.S. District Judge Audrey B. Collins said.
