Ironically, during this presidential election, neither the Democrat nor Republican could safely identify himself as, respectively, liberal or conservative. "Liberal" became largely associated with fiscal indiscipline and failed economic policy in the 60s and 70s. The same can be said of "conservatism" during the last decade.
