Hearst, MediaNews, Reilly Should Let Public Look at Settlement

Forum Column – By Peter Scheer – In a stunning display of chutzpah, S.F. Bay Area newspaper publishers and a local businessman decided kept their antitrust settlement secret, even as they issued statements to the press describing what the settlement “means.” The press, unfortunately, went along with this charade.

      News organizations are notoriously bad at covering stories in which they are participants. Recent examples include the Wall Street Journal, whose top editors knew for days about Rupert Murdoch's offer to purchase Dow Jones, owner of that newspaper and related businesses, before the news was made public - not by the Wall Street Journal, but by CNBC, a competitor.
