Mom's Not The Word When Asserting Right to Counsel
Focus Column - Criminal Law - By Laurie L. Levenson - "I want my mom." While this phrase is uttered frequently by suspects during police interrogations, it does not necessarily trigger any constitutional rights. Unless a suspect's mother happens to be his lawyer, asking for mom generally does not constitute an assertion of the defendant's Miranda rights.
