Experts wary of push to dump grand juries in cop shooting cases

A proposal to end the use of grand juries to review police deadly-force in California is drawing a mixed response from criminal justice experts, but backers say the secretive nature of grand juries hurts public trust in the justice system.

SACRAMENTO - Legal experts defended the use of grand juries to investigate police shootings in the state Tuesday, after a legislator proposed to bar their use, arguing the secrecy of the proceedings leads to a lack of police accountability. Some academics and former prosecutors said the bodies provide useful tools for investigating cases, and allow community members to have a say in high profile prosecutions.
