Assistant U.S. Attorney Christopher Brunwin, left, was honored by the Anti-Defamation League this week, along with a large team of law enforcement officers, for hate crime prosecutions against the Avenues Gang. Assistant U.S. Attorney Michael Lowe, left, and other members of the mutli-jurisdiction Varrio Hawaiian Gardens Task Force were also awarded a Helene & Joseph Sherwood Family Prize for Combating Hate. To his right is Assistant Attorney General Thomas E. Perez, who heads the Civil Rights unit and gave the keynote speech at Wednesday’s awards luncheon, and ADL Western States Counsel Michelle Deutchman. Orange County deputy district attorneys Jeff Level, Jim Mendelson and Ebrahim Baytieh were recognized for the prosecution of the Public Enemy Number 1 gang and other gangs for crimes against minorities.
