LOS ANGELES — A letter by a retained plaintiff’s witness sent to the judge in a failure to warn Proposition 65 bench trial against coffee vendors is stoking the plaintiff’s fears that it could disrupt its more-than-seven-year-long case.

Superior Court Judge Elihu Berle last week received a letter from caffeine expert Jack James, but declined reading it in its entirety after determining it could be an improper ex parte communication....
