Department of Justice asks judge to hammer Google

Government attorneys argued at a hearing Wednesday that the conduct of Google, a subsidiary of Alphabet Inc., in an online privacy case calls for particularly strong sanctions due to a pattern of behavior in resisting law enforcement’s efforts to obtain data connected to criminal investigations of its users.

SAN FRANCISCO — Google has a history of stonewalling government requests for its users’ data and should face especially stiff sanctions for refusing to turn over information involving an overseas user, U.S. Justice Department lawyers argued Wednesday.
