US high court rules against detained foreigners seeking mandatory bond hearings

In a setback for immigration advocates, the U.S. Supreme Court on Tuesday ruled against a class of plaintiffs who argued that federal law entitles those in immigration detention to bond hearings after six months.

U.S. Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito wrote that the 9th Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals erroneously concluded that periodic bond hearings are required for people in immigration detention.

The U.S. Supreme Court on Tuesday ruled against a class of plaintiffs who argued that federal law requires bond hearings for those in immigration detention more than six months.

The high court remanded the case back to the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in a 5-3 decision and did not rule on whether holding certain foreigners indefinitely in detention violated the U.S. Constitution.
