Judge certifies property owner class in suit over oil spill

A federal judge has certified a large subclass of property owners in a sprawling lawsuit against a Texas oil company.

A class action against an oil company over a spill received a boost after a federal judge agreed to certify a group of Southern California beachfront property owners.

U.S. District Judge Philip S. Gutierrez granted certification Tuesday to a subclass of real property owners who live along 165 miles of coastal land affected by a 2015 pipeline rupture that released 142,000 gallons of oil into the Pacific Ocean.
