Governor signs law that limits when witnesses can be asked their immigration status

Gov. Jerry Brown signed a bipartisan Senate bill that prohibits disclosure of witnesses’ immigration status unless it is directly relevant to the issue on which they are testifying.

Gov. Jerry Brown signed a bipartisan state Senate bill Thursday that prohibits disclosure of a witnesses’ immigration status unless it is directly relevant to the issue.

In order to bypass it, the law requires attorneys to prove to a judge in camera that a witness’ status is admissible. It does not apply in cases, civil or criminal, where the information is needed to prove an offense or an affirmative defense.
