President Donald J. Trump has asked the Department of Justice to request a California federal judge to modify a 1997 settlement agreement setting nationwide policy favoring the release of minors who cross the border illegally.

President Donald J. Trump, shown Wednesday in Minnesota, signed an executive order Wednesday to house families together when they illegally cross the border, which may conflict with a previous court settlement.

President Donald J. Trump has asked the U.S. Department of Justice to request a California federal judge to modify a 1997 settlement agreement setting nationwide policy favoring the release of minors who cross the border without permission.

On Tuesday, Trump signed an executive order intended to end his administration’s practice of separating families who cross the U.S.-Mexico border.
