Attorney General Jeff Sessions, seeking to clear an asylum petition backlog of 650,000 cases, has issued new guidance limiting entry into the U.S. for people claiming they are fleeing domestic or gang violence.
New policy guidance from the U.S. immigration service could decrease the backlog of asylum requests but might expose the government to litigation risk, according to experts.
The guidance clarifies a decision by U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions last month that limits asylum protections for people who say they fled domestic violence or persecution by gangs. Matter of A-B-, (Dec. 8, 2016).
