According to the court’s public information office, the state’s high court has heard more cases this year than recent previous years.

California Supreme Court Justice Carol Corrigan found that Proposition 66's five-year mandate for clearing death penalty appeals was directive, rather than mandatory.

Supporters of Proposition 66, an initiative aimed at expediting the appeals of death penalty convictions, have been waiting a long time for its results. Now, a year into its roll-out, it appears they may have to wait a bit longer.

The initiative, passed by voters in 2016, took aim at California's backlog of death penalty cases on appeal by freeing the California Supreme Court of some of its obligations relating to the process. But, ...
