Lawmakers consider eyewitness lineup changes to prevent wrongful convictions

SB 923, introduced by Scott Wiener (D-San Francisco), would require a statewide standardized set of procedures for law enforcement conducting live and photo suspect lineups. Supporters say it will reduce the number of wrongful convictions in California resulting from eyewitnesses misidentifying suspects during criminal investigations.

LOS ANGELES — The day Jennifer Thompson learned she had misidentified her rapist, accidentally helping send the wrong man to jail for 11 years, she felt like “the earth swallowed me,” she said at an informational session for proposed legislation to change eyewitness identification procedures in criminal investigation.
