State bill aimed to barring courthouse arrests could set up showdown with Trump administration

The state Assembly has passed a bill designed to bar immigration arrests at courthouses.

The Assembly passed a bill designed to bar immigration arrests at courthouses. But it's not the bill legislators debated for the past year.

SB 349 bars "civil arrests" at courthouses but does not specifically mention immigration. The goal of the bill's author, Sen. Ricardo Lara, D-Bell Gardens, is to prevent immigration arrests at courthouses.
