Governor signs bill to toughen retail theft penalties

Jerry Brown's third and fourth terms as governor have pushed California in a far more liberal direction on criminal justice, but a bill he signed late last week could lead to longer sentences for "organized retail theft."

Gov. Jerry Brown’s third and fourth terms have pushed California in a far more liberal direction on criminal justice, but a bill he signed late last week could lead to longer sentences for organized retail theft.

AB 1065 is intended to address theft rings law enforcement officials said have sprung up in the wake of Proposition 47, which passed in 2014. The Brown-backed voter initiative reduced thefts below $950 to a misdemeanor.
