The U.S. Supreme Court is set to hear arguments next week in a case that is expected to decide whether thousands of immigrants with criminal records are given a bond hearing once they are detained by immigration officials.

The case is the subject of different findings in multiple federal appeals courts and is expected to turn on the interpretation of a 1996 statute mandating detention for certain noncitizen convicts.
