Asylum seekers who turn 18 must appear in immigration court

Some foreign children who become adults while awaiting asylum hearings now must try their cases in immigration court as the result of a Board of Immigration Appeals decision Tuesday.

Some foreign children who become adults while awaiting asylum hearings now must try their cases in immigration court as the result of a Board of Immigration Appeals decision Tuesday.

Minors who enter the U.S. without legal permission and are deemed to be unaccompanied are allowed to seek asylum with an asylum officer outside of the immigration courts. Adults must go before an immigration judge while facing deportation.
