City agrees to settle contentious homeless property rights case

The LA City Council on Wednesday voted 10-2 in favor of authorizing city attorney Mike Feuer to settle the ongoing civil rights case filed in 2016 on behalf of homeless plaintiffs, who accused LAPD of seizing and destroying basic items necessary to survive. Specific terms of what the final settlement may be are currently unknown at this time.

LOS ANGELES -- An agreement reached Wednesday by the Los Angeles City Council to settle a property rights lawsuit will likely continue to restrict the seizure and destruction of Skid Row's homeless camps.

Details of the settlement have yet to be determined, according to Carol Sobel, one of the attorneys representing homeless people in the complaint. Mitchell v. City of Los Angeles, 16-CV01750 (C.D. Cal, filed March 14, 2016).
