Facebook’s new general counsel appointee renews data privacy concerns

Jennifer Newstead is Facebook’s new general counsel. With a resume that includes helping to write the Patriot Act under George W. Bush’s administration, it’s causing concern for some who believe it could put user privacy at risk.

The attorney Facebook Inc. has selected to be its general counsel has raised concerns, especially among privacy advocates.

Jennifer Newstead served in the George W. Bush administration and was part of the team that drafted the USA Patriot Act, a still-debated law that expanded the government's power to conduct surveillance in hopes of preventing terrorist attacks. She post recently served in a post at the State Department.
