Footnoting all cites isn’t optimal, but neither is the status quo
As someone who has written law review articles and drafted opinions for the California Supreme Court, I appreciated Justice Michael Raphael’s discussing whether to cite authorities in the text or footnotes.

As someone who has written law review articles and drafted opinions for the California Supreme Court, I appreciated Justice Michael Raphael's discussing whether to cite authorities in the text or footnotes. ("Justices and their citations," May 8.) An important difference between the two kinds of writings, however, warrants different citation models.
