Contra Costa County DA will no longer prosecute some misdemeanors

Defendants who would otherwise be prosecuted for these crimes will instead be diverted to community-based behavioral health service providers.

Prosecutors in Contra Costa County will no longer file misdemeanor charges for crimes including trespassing, drug possession, shoplifting or disorderly conduct, an effort District Attorney Diana Becton says will reduce a backlog of nonviolent cases in the court system.
