Suit seeks halt to dam that would flood historic Central Valley canyon
The Del Puerto Water District has proposed building a dam that would floor Del Puerto Canyon, creating a lake capable of holding about 80,000 acre feet of water. This would be a relatively small reservoir by California standards, but the plaintiffs claim it would “inundate, and thereby permanently destroy, at least 75 acres of designated prime farmland and unique farmland.”

A coalition of environmental groups have challenged a proposed Central Valley dam and reservoir under the California Environmental Quality Act. The plaintiffs claim the proposed site is the habitat of several native species and the waters would cover heavily used recreational trails.
