Oil company seeks to reopen litigation against pipeline company in oil spill case

Plains All American Pipeline argues that it is immune from service interruption claims under the public utility doctrine, and thus the trial court's dismissal of Venoco LLP's claims against it should remain.

Plains All American Pipeline, sued in connection with a 2015 oil spill off the Santa Barbara County coast, is fighting to block an oil company from reopening litigation in federal court, pointing to precedents that have long held public utilities are immune from service interruption claims.

Plains All American Pipeline LP was criminally charged and sued by property owners and oil workers in connection with the spill.
