State DOJ's Medi-Cal fraud and elder abuse bureau gets more funds, becomes a division
As the hardest hit population during the pandemic, accounting for 34% of COVID-related deaths, the elderly have become increasingly more dependent on skilled nursing facilities to provide appropriate care and thus have become more vulnerable to abuse and fraud, according to the justice department.




Attorney General Xavier Becerra has directed additional resources to the Department of Justice's Bureau of Medi-Cal Fraud and Elder Abuse, elevating it to a division, according to an announcement Wednesday.
Becerra also announced the launch of Operation SAFE (Stop Abuse and Fraud of Elders), to crack down on elder abuse and fraud in California's skilled nursing facilities during the pandemic.
