Bill aims to make public amounts paid to settle suits against law officers

Assemblymember Kevin McCarty, D-Sacramento, is trying to shine more light on this process with a proposed measure introduced last week that would mandate public access to details of settlements stemming from allegations of improper police conduct.

Allegations of law enforcement misconduct have cost California taxpayers hundreds of millions of dollars in recent years, as municipalities routinely settle these types of lawsuits outside regular court proceedings to avoid extended litigation and they pay them out of their general fund budgets. And when those settlements are reached, the details of what they entail are rarely publicized.
