California case at US Supreme Court could reshape law on warrantless searches

State and federal courts have long been divided on whether officers in hot pursuit of a misdemeanor suspect qualifies as an exigent circumstance justifying a warrantless home entry. While the high court has twice held that such entry by officers in pursuit of suspected felons meets that exception, the court has not addressed whether it applies to misdemeanor suspects.
