LA County defendants can be held for 30 days before hearing

The extension, which drew criticism from Los Angeles County Public Defender Ricardo Garcia, means some defendants will be held in pretrial detention up to 20 days longer than would otherwise be allowed under state law.

Statutory timelines for criminal trials and juvenile dependency matters have been extended by one to three weeks in Los Angeles County following the deaths of two court staffers earlier this month.
