Judge orders cameras to watch guards at 5 prisons

Senior U.S. District Judge Claudia Wilken of the Northern District of California found credible the declarations of several physically or mentally ill inmates who stated they were beaten, restrained, physically assaulted, pepper-sprayed or ignored when they asked for help or accommodations.

Body cameras and fixed surveillance cameras will be installed at five prison facilities to better investigate staff misconduct, a federal judge decided after finding credible claims of inmates being beaten, restrained and pepper-sprayed.
