Alameda County probe shows disability law violations, US DOJ says

An investigation found the county failed to provide appropriate services to inmates with mental disabilities and that on any given day, hundreds of people are unnecessarily institutionalized for lengthy stays at one of several large, locked psychiatric facilities, according to the Department of Justice announcement.

The U.S. Department of Justice announced Thursday it has reason to believe conditions and practices in Alameda County and especially in its Santa Rita Jail violate the Americans with Disabilities Act and the U.S. Constitution.
