20-year-old murder case can’t be retried, says Riverside DA
“When cases are returned by the appellate court two decades after a conviction, that can present significant challenges in retrying a case,” Riverside District Attorney Mike Hestrin said in an email Friday. “Those challenges can include the possible degradation of forensic evidence for follow-up analysis and, as we had in this matter, the deaths of key witnesses.”




Though Riverside County prosecutors say her attorneys did not focus on proving her innocence, a Corona woman whose 2005 murder conviction was overturned by the California Supreme Court last year will not face a new trial in connection with the murder of her former boyfriend.
