Justices appear ready to strike California’s donor disclosure law

The state law requires disclosure of names and addresses of tax-exempt organizations’ large donors.

Most U.S. Supreme Court justices appeared sympathetic Monday to arguments by two conservative nonprofits that they should not be required to disclose the names of their large donors to the state attorney general's office.

But it was less certain that the court would strike down as unconstitutional the California requirement, which the state said is intended to combat fraud by charitable organizations.
