44 DAs sue state for rules to free 76,000 prisoners early

A prisons department spokeswoman said the rules are allowed under Proposition 57, a 2016 voter initiative designed to reduce the state’s prison population by creating new avenues for inmates to seek parole.

Forty-four county district attorneys sued the state Wednesday to block regulations they say could cause the early release of 76,000 state prison inmates, including those sentenced for serious and violent crimes.

They say the Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation improperly adopted emergency regulations last month in violation of the state Administrative Procedures Act.
