Activist behind Proposition 65 says labeling law is in danger

On Sunday, Penny Newman’s attorney submitted a motion to intervene in a lawsuit filed by the California Chamber of Commerce seeking to stop lawsuits over acrylamide, a chemical found in coffee and other foods but considered toxic in large amounts.

Many Californians are familiar with Proposition 65, if only from the warnings they sometimes see when they enter buildings. Far fewer have heard of Penny Newman.

But the 74-year-old environmental activist who helped put Proposition 65 on the ballot in 1986 is still around -- and she doesn't think the state is doing enough to protect the law.
