Magistrate judges fill gap for vacant Article III posts
According to data from the federal Judicial Conference, California’s Eastern District shares a distinction with the District of New Mexico: Both courts have 12 slots for magistrate judges but just six district court judgeships. Each court also has two vacancies among their Article III judges.

"Magistrate judge ratio" isn't a term people often use when talking about federal courts. But maybe it should be.
"We have a lot of magistrate judges relative to the national average," Magistrate Judge Jeremy D. Peterson of the U.S. Eastern District of California said in a recent interview. "That helps the district function given the shortage of district judges."
